Did You Know? – Ammonia Receiver Marking

Ammonia receiver tanks are at the heart of any ammonia refrigeration system.  Knowing the proper level at which your receiver tank should be maintained is crucial to the efficient operation of your system.  A system with too little charge can result in erratic operation of ammonia compressors which could lead to inadequate cooling of product in the plant.  A system that is over charged could lead to a system release or could push a non-Process Safety Management facility beyond the ten thousand pound limit and require much more stringent management of change tracking inside the plant.

The first reaction of many operators is to assume that if the level goes down in the tank there must be a leak.  The level in a vessel can change daily due to the process load requirements on the system.  Another reason that the load requirements can vary is the ambient temperature changes from summer to winter months.  It is imperative that ammonia operators, maintenance, and engineering know where the level should be on the sight glass during these seasonal changes.  The most common way to identify the proper level is to use an indelible marker to mark the vessel for both winter and summer operation levels.  This should be done directly beside each tank’s sight glass.

For a thorough analysis of your system, please contact the Freije Engineering and Service Departments.  We have the ability to analyze your system and to educate your operators on the proper functioning of the system.
